Remembering the Edmund Fitzgerald 50 Years Later
The largest ship sailing the Great Lakes in 1975 sank fifty years ago today, on November 10, 1975, taking 29 souls with it to the depths of Lake Superior.
The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was a 728-foot iron ore carrier that made 748 round trips between Wisconsin and Detroit before its final, fateful voyage.
The crew manning the ship that day hailed from Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and beyond. The ship was carrying 26,000 pounds of iron ore, and set sail for Detroit on November 9th at 2:15 p.m.

The Voyage
About six hours into its trip from Superior, Wisconsin to Detroit’s Zug Island, the “Titanic of the Great Lakes” was put on alert by a gale warning for all of Lake Superior from the National Weather Service.
The Fitzgerald’s captain, Ernest McSorley, acknowledged the nasty weather conditions through communications with a nearby ship, the Arthur M. Anderson. After several hours passed, the Fitzgerald went missing from the Anderson’s radar.
Within an hour, the U.S. Coast Guard began a search mission to look for the ship to no avail. All 29 crewmembers perished, leading to the Fitzgerald’s place in history as the greatest maritime tragedy the Great Lakes has ever seen.
