1864 Steamer Found in Lake Michigan
The Lac La Belle, a 217-foot passenger steamer built in 1864, was found at the bottom of Lake Michigan after being missing for 154 years.
On a stormy night in October 1872, the Lac La Belle’s fate was doomed after encountering a severe gale, with eight men dying from the shipwreck.
The steamer was lost since that night until this week, when an Illinois shipwreck hunter located the vessel.
You can see photos of the sunken steamer here.
Michigan Loses 100,000 Acres of Farmland
A new report from the USDA showed Michigan to have lost 100,000 acres of farmland in 2024.
Nationally, farmland has trended down as a result of an increased need for residential and commercial development, including data center projects.
The decrease in farmland supply in Michigan has driven prices up $500 per acre.
You can see a map of lost farmland in the state here.
